Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that India will roll out a nationwide Smart Border project within a year, covering nearly 6,000 km of international borders. Speaking at the BSF Investiture Ceremony 2026 in New Delhi, he vowed to identify and deport every illegal immigrant while strengthening frontier security with technology.

Smart Border Rollout

The Smart Border plan will integrate drone radars, thermal cameras, and advanced surveillance systems to replace manual vigilance with predictive monitoring. The Border Security Force (BSF), now the world’s largest border-guarding force with 2.7 lakh personnel, will be equipped with modern tools to detect infiltration attempts more effectively.

Crackdown On Illegal Immigration

Shah asserted that illegal migration is a planned conspiracy to engineer demographic shifts. He pledged that every infiltrator would be deported, ensuring India’s demographic balance remains intact. A High-Power Demography Mission will be launched to support personnel deployed along sensitive borders, reinforcing the government’s zero-tolerance stance.

Coordination With States

The BSF has been directed to expand its intelligence network beyond border outposts, working closely with state police and district administrations. Special focus will be placed on West Bengal, Assam, and Tripura, where infiltration risks are higher. Meetings with chief ministers of these states are planned to align strategies against infiltration and smuggling.

Broader Security Vision

Shah compared the infiltration challenge to the fight against Left-wing extremism, stressing that it must be eliminated “from its roots.” He praised the BSF’s evolution from 25 battalions in 1965 to 2.7 lakh personnel today, highlighting its role in safeguarding India’s sovereignty.
