Ayushman Bharat Finally Knocks On Bengal’s Door, With July 1 Rollout Date Set

Ayushman Bharat, the Centre’s flagship health insurance scheme, is set to roll out in West Bengal from July 1, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced. The move could bring crores of low-income families in the state under a national health cover umbrella. It also marks a major political and policy shift in Centre–state health cooperation.

The rollout will plug Bengal into the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) network, which offers cashless treatment at empanelled public and private hospitals up to a defined annual limit per family. For a state with high out-of-pocket health spending and large rural pockets, integration with Ayushman Bharat could significantly change how poor households access secondary and tertiary care.

From July 1, eligible families in West Bengal are expected to be able to use Ayushman Bharat e-cards at approved hospitals for specified procedures. The state will need to empanel hospitals, integrate its IT systems with the national platform and run awareness campaigns so that beneficiaries know where and how to claim cashless treatment.
