Centre Taps ISRO Tech To Track India’s Water, Unveils New Research Push

In a year marked by erratic rainfall and rising water stress, the timing is not accidental. Policymakers are leaning more heavily on science and real time information, and ISRO’s satellites sit right at that intersection. The idea is simple enough on paper, though tricky in execution: see better from space, manage better on the ground.  

Scope Of The ISRO Partnership  

Under the agreement, ISRO will support central agencies with high resolution satellite imagery, remote sensing tools and analytical models for water bodies and catchments. This is expected to feed into better reservoir monitoring, flood forecasting, groundwater mapping and climate risk assessments for river basins.  

New Water Research Initiatives  

Alongside the tie up, the Centre is rolling out fresh research programmes focused on sustainable water use, basin level planning and climate resilient irrigation. Universities, specialised institutes and state departments are likely to be roped in, with an emphasis on turning satellite insights into actionable district level plans rather than just academic reports.
