God’s Own Country Stays Apart: Imagining A Kerala Outside The Indian Union

What if Kerala, often called God’s own country, had never joined the Indian Union after Independence and instead stayed on as an independent successor to Travancore and Cochin This counterfactual turns on the fraught months when Travancore briefly flirted with the idea of going it alone before finally acceding to India in 1947 and later merging with Cochin in 1949.

In reality, pressure from New Delhi, public anger and even an assassination attempt on Dewan C P Ramaswami Iyer pushed Travancore to abandon its independence gambit and sign the Instrument of Accession. But imagine that turning out differently. A coastal state blessed with ports, spices and an educated population could well have tried to position itself as a small, high human development nation, closer in narrative to a Sri Lanka or a Mauritius than to the rest of the subcontinent.

Alternate Political Trajectory

Outside the Union, politics in this hypothetical Kerala would almost certainly have looked sharper, more islanded and perhaps more vulnerable. The push and pull between royal authority, early communists and social reformers that shaped the real state might have played out against the anxiety of defending sovereignty between a rising India and an eyeing global community. Everything from language policy to land reform would likely have carried the added charge of survival, not just governance.

Economy, Migration And Soft Power

On the economic side, ports like Kochi could have become the country’s primary lifeline, with trade, tourism and later Gulf migration turning into existential pillars rather than important contributors. The now familiar Kerala story of high literacy, strong welfare and heavy dependence on remittances might have been amplified, but with far less fiscal backing in a crisis and no Union safety net to fall back on. Culturally, God’s own country would probably have leaned even harder into soft power, tourism and diaspora networks to maintain strategic relevance in a region dominated by a much larger neighbour.
