Ice Stupas 2.0: Automation Brings Water Security to Ladakh

Ladakh has innovated computerized ice stupas to fight water shortages, providing a consistent supply of water to its population. An automated ice reservoir (AIR) was installed in Igoo at 4,200 meters altitude in 2024 by a Leh-based firm, Acres of Ice. The automated system utilizes sensors, mechanized valves, and a control board to control water flow in accordance with local weather patterns. This technology is based on previous research by engineers such as Chewang Norphel and Sonam Wangchuk, who established artificial glaciers and ice stupas to harvest water in winter for use during times of drought. Automation reduces human interference, avoids pipes freezing, and cuts 95% of labor by hand. The automated system works with more than 80% efficiency, storing a large proportion of water as ice and offering a steady supply of water for agriculture.
