India Lifted The Bar: 10 Medals Secured, Even As Final Day Draws A Blank

India’s weightlifters wrapped up the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2026 in Gandhinagar with a total of 10 medals, despite finishing the final day without adding to the tally. Competing on home soil, the relatively young squad turned in one of India’s strongest Asian showings in recent years, underlining growing depth in both women’s and men’s categories. The performance is being seen as a crucial marker ahead of the next Olympic cycle and major continental events.

How India Built A 10-Medal Haul  

India’s medal run began with lifter Komal Kohar in the women’s 48kg category, who opened the account with medals in overall and clean and jerk. Rising star Gyaneshwari Yadav then added to the tally in the women’s 53kg class with a silver in snatch and an overall bronze, signalling India’s strength in the lighter women’s weights. In the men’s field, Ajith Narayana clinched an overall bronze in the 71kg division along with a clean and jerk medal, showing that India can compete strongly in the increasingly competitive middleweight categories. 

Home Crowd, High Pressure, Mixed Results  

While the Gandhinagar crowd powered several lifters to personal bests, it also brought pressure, and not all Indians made it to the podium. In categories like men’s 65kg and some higher weight classes, Indian lifters finished outside the medals despite strong attempts, reflecting the steep standard set by lifters from China, North Korea and other Asian powerhouses. The final day saw India draw a blank, but by then the hosts had already reached double digits in their medal count, softening the disappointment.

Hosting the Asian Championships after more than four decades gave India’s lifters invaluable experience against top-tier competition without the strain of travel. The mix of medals from emerging names and close misses from others offers coaches rich data to fine-tune training, recovery and weight selection strategies.
