India Successfully Demonstrates 1,000-Kilometre Quantum Communication Network

The Department of Science and Technology announced the achievement in April 2026, less than two years after the mission became operational. The milestone highlights India’s rapid progress in quantum-safe communication, with applications across defence, finance, and critical infrastructure.  

Indigenous Development  

The network was built using homegrown technology by QNu Labs, validating India’s ability to design and deploy advanced quantum key distribution systems without foreign dependence.  

Global Significance  

India now joins the ranks of countries leading in quantum communication. The 1,000-km network is among the longest globally, positioning India as a frontrunner in secure communication technologies.  

Future Roadmap  

The mission originally targeted a 2,000-km network by 2030–31, but this milestone suggests India may achieve the goal much earlier. Expansion into cross-border quantum communication and integration with critical sectors is expected in the coming years.
