India’s Green Steel Push: Can The Country Double Capacity Without Doubling Pollution?

India is preparing to ramp up steel capacity while trying to slash the sector’s carbon footprint, positioning “green steel” as a core part of its infrastructure and manufacturing push. The government is nudging producers toward cleaner technologies, more scrap usage and greater reliance on renewable energy. For a country aiming to more than double steel output in the coming years, the challenge is clear: grow fast, but emit less.

Policymakers increasingly see decarbonising steel as essential to staying competitive in export markets, accessing global capital and meeting climate commitments, even as domestic demand from construction, autos and railways rises.  

New Pathways To Cleaner Steel  

The emerging roadmap leans on three big levers: shifting more production to electric arc furnaces that can use scrap; improving energy efficiency and pollution control in existing blast furnaces; and piloting low‑carbon routes like gas‑based and, eventually, hydrogen‑based direct reduced iron. Large producers are also exploring long-term green power contracts and carbon capture solutions to reduce coal dependence over time.  

Global Pressures, Local Priorities  

India’s steelmakers face growing scrutiny from overseas buyers who are starting to price in embedded carbon, especially in Europe. Cleaner production could help Indian mills avoid future carbon border charges, win “green” orders and tap sustainability-linked finance. At home, lowering emissions and pollution from steel clusters would reduce health and environmental stress while still supporting jobs, regional development and Make in India ambitions.
