Insta Maids by Urban Company: Speedy Clean, but Lacking Protection

Originally called "Insta Maids," Urban Company's recently introduced 15-minute domestic help service—now called "Insta Help"—has generated contentious discussions. Critics have expressed concerns regarding worker exploitation and commodification, despite the service's promise of rapid access to domestic assistance, which starts at ₹49 per hour. Advertisements for "modern, clean maids" have come under fire for perpetuating stereotypes and diminishing the value of hard work. Proponents point to advantages like health insurance for employees, flexible work schedules, and a minimum salary guarantee of ₹20,000 per month. Labour unions contend, however, that the hourly wage is inadequate and puts expediency ahead of equitable working conditions. Concerns regarding moral behaviour and long-term viability are significant as Urban Company tests this service in Mumbai. The business says it wants to strike a balance between partner dignity and customer convenience, but the backlash suggests deeper systemic issues in gig work
