Moonshine Hunter: NASA's Trailblazer Seeks Lunar Water, Hold the Rocks

NASA's Lunar Trailblazer satellite, launched on February 26, 2025, is set to revolutionize our understanding of lunar water. This dishwasher-sized orbiter employs two cutting-edge instruments to map the Moon's water resources:

1) The High-resolution Volatiles and Minerals Moon Mapper (HVM3): This infrared spectrometer detects water and hydroxyl molecules by analyzing reflected sunlight.

2) The Lunar Thermal Mapper (LTM): This multispectral imager measures surface temperatures to calibrate water detections accurately.

Together, these instruments will create detailed maps of water distribution, form, and abundance across the lunar surface, including shadowed polar craters. This mission aims to support future lunar exploration and deepen our understanding of water cycles on airless bodies throughout the solar system.
