In a bold challenge to tech giant Google, Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas has unveiled his vision for the Comet browser, claiming it can outperform Google’s internal AI browser project, Project Mariner. In a recent Reddit AMA and podcast appearances, Srinivas described Comet as a user-first, agentic browser designed to automate tasks and redefine how people interact with the internet—far beyond traditional search.

Why Comet Is Different
  • Built on Chromium, but designed to be an AI-native browser
  • Integrates deeply with tools like Gmail, Google Calendar, and LinkedIn
  • Performs complex tasks like recruitment workflows, email scheduling, and meeting prep
  • Functions like a digital operating system, running background processes from natural language prompts
Srinivas emphasized that Comet is not just a chatbot or search engine—it’s a proactive assistant that understands user intent and executes tasks autonomously.

Taking on Google’s Project Mariner
  • Project Mariner is reportedly available only to Google’s $250/month subscribers
  • Srinivas called it “similar but quite limited” compared to Comet’s capabilities
  • Criticized Google’s ad-driven business model as a barrier to true AI innovation
  • Warned that Google may eventually copy or adopt Comet’s features, but lacks the agility to lead
“It’s a giant bureaucratic organization with too many decision-makers,” Srinivas said. “They need to embrace one path and suffer, in order to come out stronger.”

Disrupting the Workplace
  • Srinivas claims Comet could replace roles like recruiters and executive assistants
  • Automates sourcing, follow-ups, calendar syncing, and briefing tasks
  • Envisions Comet as a personal OS for professionals, streamlining workflows and saving time
Availability and Future Plans
  • Comet is currently available to Perplexity Max subscribers ($200/month)
  • Free access is being rolled out via invite system
  • iOS version expected in 2–3 months; Android timeline TBD
  • Some features like agentic search may remain exclusive to paid tiers
