The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to unveil the official election dates for five key regions—West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry. This announcement marks the beginning of one of the most closely watched electoral contests of 2026, with political parties already intensifying their campaigns.

Assembly Terms Ending Soon

The terms of the current assemblies are due to expire between May and June 2026. West Bengal’s assembly term ends on May 7, Tamil Nadu’s on May 10, Assam’s on May 20, Kerala’s on May 23, and Puducherry’s on June 15. Model Code Of Conduct Comes Into Force

Once the schedule is announced, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) will be enforced across all poll-bound states and the Union Territory. This restricts government announcements, inaugurations, and new policy launches, ensuring a level playing field for all political parties during the campaign period.

West Bengal is expected to witness multi-phase polling, similar to the 2021 elections, though opposition parties have urged the ECI to reduce the number of phases.
