India's Ministry of Culture has introduced its long-awaited 2025 Handicrafts Research Grant, which will revive traditional crafts by way of research, skill upgradation, and targeted financial assistance. The first-of-its-kind project will be driving innovation, protecting cultural heritage, and building sustainable livelihoods for artisans in India.

Major Features of the 2025 Handicrafts Research Grant

Large-Scale Operations: The scheme encourages large-scale operations—ranging from research and documentation of traditional arts to conducting workshops, seminars, festivals, and exhibitions on handicrafts of India.

Liberal Funding Pattern: Organizations eligible for funding comprise NGOs, societies, producer companies, educational institutions, and government agencies, which can receive up to 100% financial support for sanctioned projects. Grants are generally released in two phases—a larger amount in the beginning followed by a smaller amount as reimbursement after the verification of project completion.

Research Area: The Grant facilitates research and surveys on economic, social, and market trends influencing the handicrafts sector, documentation of endangered crafts, protection measures for traditional skills, and initiatives towards establishing geographical indications (GIs) for unique products.

Skill Development: Skill upgradation is the focus, with specialized workshops (such as Design and Technology Development Workshops) to target youth and marginalized artisans, and facilitating young and innovative design through exchange with experienced designers.

Market Access & Export Promotion: The scheme encourages adoption of global standards, branding, and online platforms for handicraft exporters, and international buyer-seller meets and compliance with certification.

Transparency & Accountability: Beneficiary organizations will have separate accounts for the grant, be audited from time to time, and provide proof of outcomes through online forums to provide transparency and widespread awareness.

Eligibility: Incentives are given to those projects that are inclusive in nature, e.g., SC/ST, women, and differently-abled artisans, and distribution of opportunities among artisan families.

This combined grant is going to transform the Indian handicraft industry by combining traditional practices with contemporary market needs, and fostering cultural pride and sustainable growth.
