The much-awaited Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway has received central sanction, opening the doors for a revolutionary leap in North India's connectivity. The six-lane, 568-km greenfield expressway will link Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh with Siliguri in West Bengal, with a staggering 417 km stretch passing through eight strategically located districts of Bihar. The project, sanctioned at a cost of ₹38,645 crore, has been designed for 120 kmph speed and will include long bridges across Gandak, Bagmati, and Kosi rivers to provide robust all-weather connectivity.
Now, the journey between Siliguri and Gorakhpur would take nearly 15 hours. The expressway will cut this time to six hours, a major boost in people as well as freight movement to the Northeast and Delhi."
Land acquisition has already commenced, and the project would traverse 313 villages in 39 blocks, bringing economic opportunities and infrastructure development to the region.
National and state leadership has hailed the expressway as a "historic achievement" to boost Bihar's and the region's commerce, tourism, and industrial development. With commercial operations to start imminently, the Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway can be a game-changer for the region's development and national integration.
