IMD Issues Red Alert for Kerala and Karnataka, Torrential Rains to Persist Till July 25

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Kerala and coastal Karnataka under a red alert, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall through July 25. The warning comes amid intensifying monsoon activity driven by multiple weather systems, with Delhi-NCR also expected to receive intermittent showers over the next few days.
 
Key Highlights:
 
  • Red alert issued for Kannur and Kasaragod districts in Kerala; orange alert in Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad.
  • Coastal Karnataka and parts of Tamil Nadu, Bihar, and Uttarakhand are under orange alerts for very heavy rainfall.
  • Squally winds of 40–50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, expected along Kerala and Karnataka coasts; IMD has issued a fisherman warning.

  • Kerala: Rainfall exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours likely in northern districts; strong westerlies fueling widespread showers and gusty winds.
  • Karnataka: Coastal areas to receive intense downpours; inland regions may see localized flooding and travel disruptions.
  • Delhi-NCR: Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms expected; cloudy skies and rising humidity to persist till July 24.
 
Weather Systems in Play:
  • A depression over northeast Rajasthan is weakening, while a new low-pressure area is forming over the north Bay of Bengal around July 24.
  • An east-west trough from south Karnataka to coastal Andhra Pradesh is enhancing rainfall distribution across southern India.
