India has officially crossed 100 GW of installed solar power capacity, marking a historic leap in its renewable energy journey. The achievement comes five years ahead of schedule and positions the country as a global leader in solar deployment.
Decade of Growth
• Solar capacity surged from just 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100.33 GW by January 2025—a staggering 3,450% increase
• In 2024 alone, India added a record-breaking 24.5 GW, more than doubling the previous year’s installations
• Utility-scale solar contributed 18.5 GW, with Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh leading the charge
Rooftop Revolution
• Rooftop solar saw a 53% jump in 2024, adding 4.59 GW of new capacity
• The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in 2024, has enabled nearly 9 lakh households to adopt solar power
• The scheme is credited with making solar energy accessible to middle-income and rural families
Manufacturing Momentum
• India’s solar module production capacity grew from 2 GW in 2014 to 60 GW in 2024
• With continued policy support, the country aims to reach 100 GW in manufacturing capacity by 2030
• Export value of solar PV products rose 23-fold to $2 billion in FY 2024
What’s Next
• 84.10 GW of solar projects are under implementation, with another 47.49 GW in the tendering phase
• India’s broader goal is 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy by 2030, with solar expected to remain the backbone
