It is solely in Norway, not Sweden, that the Nobel Peace Prize is given by a fiveperson Norwegian Nobel Committee elected by the Norwegian Parliament. The committee selects from a list of hundreds of foreign nominations submitted by qualified people such as politicians, professors, international judges, and previous winners.
Nomination to Decision
-
Nominations must be received by January 31 annually. Selfnominations are not accepted.
-
The committee evaluates applicants based on Alfred Nobel's will of 1895, taking into account international fraternity, demilitarization, or success in peace diplomacy.
-
A majority vote determines the laureate. In case no one qualifies, the award can be withheld.
Why It Still Matters
Aside from symbolic, the prize is a global recognition of moral courage and leadership transformation in a world characterized by polarization.
