Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan (PTR) has criticized the three-language formula of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 as a "proven-to-be-unsuccessful model." The state, which has followed a two-language policy of Tamil and English for decades, perceives the three-language formula as the imposition of Hindi and erosion of its linguistic identity. PTR wondered why a working two-language model should be given up in favor of a flawed one. Chief Minister MK Stalin also referred to NEP as a "destructive Nagpur plan," stating Tamil Nadu will never comply, even in times of financial hardship.
