From June 17, 2025, Amazon Prime Video in India will begin streaming limited ads on movies and TV shows, becoming part of the worldwide transition to ad-supported streaming. Amazon informed members that this move would enable greater expenditure on original and licensed content while guaranteeing subscribers fewer ads than on regular TV or on other streaming services. The Prime membership fee now (₹1,499/year) has not been raised.
For those who like to pay extra for no ads, Amazon will offer an optional ad-free add-on for ₹699 a year or ₹129 a month, effective from the same date. This add-on is in addition to the existing Prime membership. Subscribers can still enjoy other benefits of Prime without alteration.
The action aligns Amazon with competitors like Netflix and Disney+ that also offer ad-supported and ad-free versions. Amazon's action follows the growing use of hybrid subscription models to help balance cost and content investment.
