Uttar Pradesh is all set to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda with a week-long ‘Janjati Bhagidari Utsav’ from November 13 to 18. The celebrations will include tribal cultural exhibitions, dances, cuisines, and art from 18 states, fostering tribal pride and unity.
Uttar Pradesh, in collaboration with Arunachal Pradesh, is organizing a grand celebration to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, a revered tribal leader and freedom fighter. The event, named ‘Janjati Bhagidari Utsav’, will span six days from November 13 to 18, primarily held in Lucknow with additional festivities in Sonbhadra district.
Birsa Munda, hailed as “Dharti Aba” (Father of the Earth), led the Munda Rebellion against British colonial exploitation, championing tribal rights and social justice. His birth anniversary is now observed as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Divas’ (Tribal Pride Day) to honor his profound legacy.
The celebrations showcase tribal textiles, art, cuisine, and dances representing 18 states, emphasizing the unity and rich heritage of India’s tribal communities. Nearly 20,000 tribal participants are expected, along with cultural performances, exhibitions, and traditional crafts.
The events are coordinated by the UP Folk and Tribal Culture Institute and supported by the Tourism and Social Welfare Department under the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ initiative. The occasion highlights the government’s commitment to promoting tribal culture and empowerment, with virtual attendance by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and participation from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
