Mumbai’s ambitious Metro Line 7A has crossed a major milestone with the successful completion of its final underground tunnel, marking 61% overall progress and bringing the city closer to seamless airport connectivity.
Key Milestone Achieved
- On July 14, 2025, Tunnel Boring Machine Dhruv completed a 1.65-km upline tunnel between Andheri (East) and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
- The tunnel, built at depths ranging from 12 to 28 meters, features a finished diameter of 5.6 meters and was lined with 1,178 precast rings.
Engineering Feats and Challenges
- The tunnelling operation navigated complex urban infrastructure, including:
- Crossing beneath the Sahar Elevated Road
- Passing over Metro Line 3
- Diverting a major 1800mm sewer line and underground water mains
- The breakthrough follows the earlier completion of the downline tunnel by TBM Disha in April 2025.
Project Scope and Connectivity
- Metro Line 7A spans 3.4 km, with 2.5 km underground and 0.94 km elevated.
- It includes two stations: Airport Colony (elevated) and CSMIA T2 (underground).
- Once operational, it will offer a direct interchange with Metro Line 3 and eventually integrate with Lines 2A, 7, 9, and 8, enhancing north-south and east-west connectivity.
Looking Ahead
- The line is expected to be operational by 2026, though system installations and station development may extend the timeline to 2027.
- Commuters from Mira-Bhayandar and Dahisar will benefit from faster access to BKC and South Mumbai via a single interchange at the airport.
