Nyishi Scholar Dr. Joram Aniya Inducted Into NITI Aayog

The Centre has announced the appointment of Dr. Joram Aniya as a full-time member of NITI Aayog, India’s premier policy think tank. This marks the first time a woman from the Nyishi community has been elevated to such a national role. Her appointment is seen as a recognition of the Northeast’s intellectual contributions and cultural heritage.

Trailblazing Academic Journey

Dr. Aniya holds the distinction of being the first woman from the Nyishi community to earn a PhD, and the first in Arunachal Pradesh to secure a doctorate in Hindi language studies. An Associate Professor and member of the Arunachal Pradesh Private Educational Regulatory Commission, she brings over 18 years of experience in teaching, research, and public policy engagement. Her scholarly work spans Nyishi literature, culture, and indigenous knowledge systems, with several books authored and edited.

Significance Of The Appointment

Her induction into NITI Aayog is expected to strengthen representation of indigenous voices in national policy discourse. Observers highlight that her expertise in literature and grassroots engagement will enrich discussions on inclusive development, cultural preservation, and education. Chief Minister Pema Khandu congratulated her, calling the appointment “a proud moment for Arunachal Pradesh and the entire Northeast.” 

Broader Leadership Changes

Alongside Dr. Aniya, R. Balasubramaniam, associated with Mission Karmayogi, has also been appointed as a full-time member. Recently, economist Ashok Lahiri was named Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog, signaling a broader reshaping of the institution’s leadership to integrate diverse expertise in governance, capacity building, and cultural representation.
