Prime Minister Expands NITI Aayog With Two New Full-Time Members

India’s top policy institution has received a leadership boost with two new appointments following a recent overhaul. The additions bring fresh academic, governance, and regional perspectives, reinforcing NITI Aayog’s role in reforms, cooperative federalism, and long-term strategic planning.  

NITI Aayog Gets Two New Voices  

Dr R Balasubramaniam brings decades of experience in institutional capacity building and governance. Dr Joram Aniya, from Arunachal Pradesh, adds academic depth and cultural scholarship, marking a historic milestone as the first woman from the Nyishi community to earn a PhD and the first doctorate in Hindi from the state.  

Why The Appointments Matter  

Together, the appointments broaden NITI Aayog’s diversity in social, regional, and policy representation. At a time when inclusive development and effective implementation are national priorities, their expertise is expected to strengthen the institution’s ability to address complex challenges.  

The Bigger Institutional Reset  

These appointments follow the April 24 reconstitution of NITI Aayog, which named Ashok Lahiri as Vice-Chairman and added Rajiv Gauba, K V Raju, Gobardhan Das, Abhay Karandikar, and M Srinivas as full-time members. The expansion underscores the government’s vision of NITI Aayog as a vital pillar of India’s reform agenda.
