Roaring Commitment: India to Host International Big Cat Alliance HQ, Uniting 7 Majestic Species

In a historical step for international wildlife conservation, India has formally signed the Headquarters Agreement with the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), solidifying its position as the host country of the alliance's permanent headquarters and secretariat. The agreement, signed in New Delhi by P. Kumaran, Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (East), and IBCA Director General Dr. S.P. Yadav, lays the foundation for a new world of global cooperation to safeguard the seven symbol of the world's big cats: tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar, and puma.

Under the agreement, India will extend budgetary assistance of ₹150 crore over a period of five years, which will go towards developing infrastructure, establishing a financial corpus, and meeting operating costs. The agreement also involves provisions for visa, privileges, and immunities for IBCA staff for ensuring smooth functioning of the partnership.

Initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023 on the occasion of Project Tiger's 50th anniversary, the IBCA aims to bring countries and conservationists together to protect big cats and their habitats. The initiative not only highlights India's leadership role in wildlife conservation but also represents a strong pledge to ensure the future of these magnificent animals across the globe.
