School Lifeline Extended: Centre Keeps Key Schemes Running Till September 30

The Centre has extended two major school schemes whose term ended on March 31, 2026, safeguarding critical education and mid-day meal benefits during the transition to the 16th Finance Commission period. The Union finance ministry cleared the stop-gap extension “in the interest of uninterrupted implementation” of ongoing programmes.

What Has Been Extended

Samagra Shiksha And PM Poshan

Samagra Shiksha, launched in 2018 by merging Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan and Teacher Education, supports schooling from pre-school to Class 12 across India. PM Poshan (earlier Mid-Day Meal Scheme) provides cooked meals to children in government and government-aided schools, improving attendance and learning outcomes.

Temporary Window Before New Cycle

The schemes were due to end on March 31, 2026, but have now been extended up to September 30, 2026, or until formal approval for the 16th Finance Commission cycle (2026-27 to 2030-31), whichever is earlier. During this interim period, scope, coverage, cost norms and implementation conditions will remain unchanged.

Why This Matters For Students And States

The extension ensures that funding to states for teacher support, infrastructure, learning interventions and school meals continues without disruption. Officials have indicated that norms and scheme design are likely to be revised at the time of the full five-year extension, aligning with National Education Policy 2020 and emerging state-level needs.
