India and the United States have signalled a renewed push to conclude a bilateral trade deal “at an early date,” while underlining deeper strategic alignment on West Asia, terrorism, maritime security and visa issues for Indian travellers. The messaging from External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio casts India as a key global influencer and long term partner in Washington’s Indo Pacific calculus.

In New Delhi, Jaishankar said he and Rubio discussed concluding a trade agreement with the US at an early date, indicating fresh political intent to move beyond incremental market access talks.
