Vijay’s TVK Gains Congress Support, AIADMK’s Next Move Could Decide Tamil Nadu’s Future

Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s TVK has emerged as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections with 108 seats, but it remains 10 short of the majority mark of 118. Congress, with five MLAs, has extended support, giving TVK a tally of 113. Now, AIADMK’s internal divisions and potential support are adding fresh intrigue to the government formation process.

Congress leaders confirmed their decision to back TVK, citing the need for a secular government and rejecting any possibility of BJP influence in Tamil Nadu. The party may seek cabinet posts in exchange for its support. 

AIADMK’s Role

AIADMK, which won 47 seats, is divided over whether to support TVK. Some MLAs are inclined to back Vijay, while others remain loyal to party chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who has resisted aligning with TVK. Reports suggest momentum is building within AIADMK for talks, though the final decision rests with the party high command. 

Political Implications

TVK’s rise marks a historic break in Tamil Nadu’s Dravidian duopoly of DMK and AIADMK. If AIADMK or smaller parties like CPI, CPM, PMK, and VCK extend support, Vijay could secure the majority needed to form government. His leadership is being hailed as a generational shift, with young voters credited for TVK’s success.
