The currency has already slid to fresh lows in 2026, with analysts warning that the fall is being driven by persistent external pressures rather than one-off market panic. Trigger One: Trade Deficit Pressure

A larger merchandise trade deficit means India needs more dollars to pay for imports than it earns from exports. Reports cited a record October trade gap, helped by higher gold imports and softer exports, creating a direct drag on the rupee.

Foreign portfolio inflows have slowed, and that matters because fewer global funds mean less dollar supply in the market. When investors pull money out of Indian equities and debt, demand for dollars rises and the rupee weakens further.
