Aadhaar 2.0 Launches With QR-Based Security, Ending Risks Of Photocopy Misuse

The Aadhaar redesign is part of UIDAI’s broader Aadhaar Vision 2032, aligning India’s identity system with global privacy standards and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act. The overhaul aims to reduce risks of identity theft and unauthorized profiling, while making Aadhaar safer to share across institutions.

What’s Changing

The new Aadhaar card will no longer print sensitive details such as name, address, date of birth, gender, or Aadhaar number. Instead, these will be embedded in an encrypted QR code, accessible only through government-authorized scanners or the UIDAI app. This ensures that only the minimum necessary information is shared during verification. 

Why It Matters

For years, photocopies of Aadhaar cards have been collected by hotels, offices, and private agencies, often stored without safeguards. This redesign prevents misuse by making Aadhaar safe to hand over physically, as no visible personal data will be exposed. Verification will shift to QR-based scanning, ensuring selective data sharing with user consent.

Long-Term Vision

The redesign supports a transition toward digital-first identity verification, reducing dependency on physical documents. It also embeds the principle of data minimisation, ensuring only essential details are disclosed for each transaction.
