India's Tech Jump: Amitabh Kant Sees Change

 

India's G20 Sherpa and past Niti Aayog CEO, Amitabh Kant, has made a pitch for a technological leapfrog to turn India into a clean-tech manufacturing powerhouse. Kant reiterated the necessity of capitalizing on opportunities generated by disruptions in global trade, pointing to India's ability to fast-track economic growth. He called for replicating the success of India's fintech in the domains of solar energy, green hydrogen, batteries, and electric vehicles with the target of surpassing 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. Kant cautioned that if this chance is not seized, there is a risk of becoming reliant on imports, especially from China. He also mentioned the absence of funding from rich countries for climate action, citing that developing nations need $1.3 trillion every year for climate objectives and sustainable development. Kant emphasized India's special position to lead the AI revolution and leverage technology for social welfare.
