The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare released the Guidance Document on Diabetes Mellitus in Children at the National Summit on Best Practices in Public Healthcare Service Delivery. This landmark step aims to strengthen child health services by ensuring universal screening from birth to 18 years and seamless care across community, district, and medical college levels.

Framework And Features

The guidelines introduce a standardized continuum of care, linking early detection at schools and community platforms with advanced treatment facilities. Suspected cases will undergo immediate blood glucose testing, followed by referral for confirmatory diagnosis.

A key highlight is the free comprehensive care package at public health facilities, covering:

• Screening and diagnostic services
• Lifelong insulin therapy

Awareness And Prevention

To aid early detection, the initiative promotes the “4Ts” awareness framework Toilet, Thirsty, Tired, and Thinner helping parents, teachers, and caregivers recognize early warning signs of Type 1 diabetes. The guidelines also emphasize training families in insulin use, blood sugar monitoring, and emergency response.
