Breaking Barriers: How Centre’s Relaxed Norms Let Farmers Apply for Crop Insurance Without IDs

The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare has introduced pivotal reforms, allowing farmers to apply for crop insurance without presenting identity proofs. This flexibility covers tenant farmers, sharecroppers, and oral lessees who previously struggled to avail insurance due to lack of official documentation.​

Under the revised guidelines of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), providing an Aadhaar card or landholding documents is no longer a strict prerequisite. Instead, farmers can submit alternate declarations or attestations from local authorities to establish their eligibility.​

The initiative aims to bridge gaps in insurance coverage, particularly in regions with fragmented landholdings and complex tenancy arrangements. State governments and insurance companies will collaborate closely to facilitate streamlined enrollment and grievance redressal.​
