BT Road Finally On Track: Baranagar–Barrackpore Metro Revival Gains Momentum After 16 Years

Originally conceived to extend Kolkata Metro’s footprint deep into the northern suburbs, the 13 km Baranagar–Barrackpore line had been virtually written off due to land and utility hurdles. Monday’s discussions at KMC headquarters signal that the state and implementing agencies are now aligned on resolving those bottlenecks.

Project Stalemate And Fresh Push

The corridor was bogged down for years mainly over the presence of a crucial Palta–Tallah water pipeline beneath BT Road and land for station infrastructure. RVNL, KMC and technical experts have begun fresh surveys and engineering assessments to safeguard the pipeline while enabling viaduct and station construction.

What This Means For Commuters

Once work actually restarts, the Baranagar–Barrackpore metro is expected to cut travel times and decongest BT Road, which now relies heavily on buses and autos. At least 200 small and large real estate projects along the corridor are also likely to benefit from improved connectivity, boosting property demand between Shyambazar and Barrackpore.

Next Steps And Timelines

Officials caution that while the “shelved” tag is gone, the project is still at a reset stage, with surveys, designs, and clearances to be completed before heavy construction resumes. A clearer execution timeline is expected only after RVNL finalises a technical solution around the BT Road pipeline and station locations.
