The Centre is preparing to widen its electrification drive beyond central ministries to public sector undertakings (PSUs) and state governments, in a bid to rapidly cut fuel use and emissions from official fleets, buildings and infrastructure. The move aims to turn government entities into anchor customers for electric vehicles, charging networks and clean power.

The expanded plan is expected to plug into existing schemes for EV charging and energy efficiency, while nudging PSUs and states to commit to hard targets on fleet electrification and green power procurement. By using public balance sheets and aggregated demand, the Centre wants to bring scale, lower costs and create a dependable baseline market for India’s clean tech ecosystem.

New Mandates For Official Fleets

Under the proposed framework, central PSUs and state departments may be asked to progressively convert a defined share of their car, bus and utility vehicle fleets to electric within set timelines. This will likely be tied to access to central support for EV procurement, charging infrastructure subsidies and blended finance solutions that ease upfront cost pressures.

Charging, Buildings And Clean Power Use

The electrification push is also set to cover wider government infrastructure: offices, depots, campuses, industrial townships and transport hubs. PSUs and state agencies could be encouraged to install public and semi public charging stations, expand rooftop solar, and shift more of their power demand to renewable sources through green open access and long term purchase agreements.
