EAM Jaishankar Embarks On Caribbean Visit After Zurich Stopover, Focus On Diaspora Outreach

Jaishankar’s Caribbean tour is part of India’s broader diplomatic outreach to nations with significant Indian-origin populations. The stopover in Zurich was ceremonial, where he was welcomed by Indian officials before continuing his journey.

Purpose Of The Visit

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that the visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations, trade, and cultural ties with Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad & Tobago. These countries host large Girmitiya communities—descendants of Indian indentured laborers—making diaspora engagement a central theme.

During the tour, Jaishankar will:

Meet the leadership of all three nations to discuss bilateral, regional, and global issues.

Hold talks on development cooperation, trade, and strategic partnerships.

Interact with business leaders to explore investment opportunities.

Strategic Importance

India’s outreach to the Caribbean reflects its commitment to South-South cooperation and expanding influence in regions beyond Asia. The visit also builds on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier CARICOM engagements, including extending OCI eligibility for diaspora in Trinidad & Tobago.
