FDA Orders Closure Of Blinkit Pune Store Over Licensing And Storage Violations

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has shut down a Blinkit dark store in Pune’s Baner-Balewadi area for operating without a valid food business licence. The facility, run by Energy Darkstore Services, was inspected on June 5, revealing multiple violations related to food safety and hygiene. The action follows a similar crackdown on Zepto’s Mumbai facility earlier this month.  

Regulatory Action And Key Findings  

- The FDA found that the Blinkit store was operating without the necessary food business licence required under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.  
- Inspectors identified improper food storage conditions, including inadequate cold storage temperature control and poor cleanliness.  
- The facility was directed to submit proper documentation to obtain a licence before resuming operations.  
- The FDA has mandated a compliance report, after which a re-inspection will be conducted.  

Food Safety Violations And Hygiene Concerns  

During the inspection, officials noted several lapses in hygiene and food handling practices. Food items were found stored directly on the floor, and expired stock was not properly segregated. Additionally, wet and unclean flooring, stagnant water near storage areas, and missing pest control audits were flagged as serious concerns.  

Industry-Wide Scrutiny On Quick Commerce Platforms  

Blinkit is not the only quick commerce firm facing regulatory scrutiny. Earlier this month, the Maharashtra FDA suspended Zepto’s food business licence in Mumbai’s Dharavi due to similar violations. Authorities found fungal growth on food items, improper segregation of expired stock, and inadequate cold storage conditions at Zepto’s facility.  

Next Steps And Compliance Measures  

The FDA has directed Blinkit’s partner, Energy Darkstore Services, to submit a compliance report addressing the violations. A re-inspection will determine whether the facility can resume operations. The crackdown highlights the growing regulatory focus on food safety standards in India’s quick commerce sector.
