The Zojila Tunnel, Asia's longest road tunnel, will be completed by 2026, as it will transform the connectivity between Ladakh and Kashmir. The 13–14.2 km-long tunnel constructed at an elevation of almost 12,000 feet below the Zojila Pass will provide all-weather, year-round connectivity to the hitherto inaccessible Ladakh region, now cut off for months by heavy snowfall and adverse weather.

Engineering Marvel and Strategic Lifeline

As a horseshoe-shaped, single-tube, two-lane tunnel, Zojila will cut down the time taken via the pass from up to four hours—and days in winter closure—to just 15–20 minutes. This leapfrog in accessibility should boost tourism, trade, and emergency response capability for the region.

The strategic value of the tunnel also lies in providing secure and unobstructed passage of troops and material for the Indian Military across the vulnerable frontiers of Ladakh.

The project is being carried out by applying the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) with the latest features including CCTV monitoring, radio control, continuous power supply, today's ventilation, and emergency exit.

Construction Problems and Updates

Work on the tunnel has been faced with formidable challenges like severe weather, frequent avalanches, logistical issues, and insufficient manpower. All these notwithstanding, over 70% of the work has already been completed, with the remaining work progressing slowly.

The cost of the project, which was initially estimated at ₹12,000 crore, stands at ₹5,500–8,300 crore due to efficient implementation and re-planning.

Broader Impact

The Zojila Tunnel is one of a series of projects to build 31 tunnels in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh that will enhance the infrastructure and stability of the region. When completed, it will not only be Asia's longest but also one of the world's tallest road tunnels, a testament to India's engineering ambition and regional development pledge.
