FSSAI Wants One Big Watchtower For Food Safety, Not 28 Small Ones

The proposed system would use a digital backbone to decide where, when and what products should be sampled, based on risk scores, previous violations, seasonal patterns and consumer complaints. State-level teams would still collect samples and conduct inspections, but the triggers and priorities would increasingly come from the Centre, building a single national view of food safety risk.  

How A Centralised Grid Could Work  

A central dashboard would pull in lab reports, online platform complaints, port inspection data and state enforcement inputs. Using this, the system could flag problem clusters  say repeated oil adulteration in a district or pesticide residues in a certain crop  and push specific sampling orders instead of relying on random or routine checks.  

Shift In Role For States And Food Businesses  

State officers would move from choosing targets themselves to executing centrally assigned checks and reporting quickly. For food companies, this could reduce arbitrary inspections but increase the chance that repeat non-compliance across multiple locations gets picked up and acted upon faster. National brands, especially, may face more consistent scrutiny across markets.

Uneven enforcement across states and recurring food safety scares have highlighted the limits of a fragmented system. A centralised model promises faster detection of systemic risks, better use of limited lab capacity and clearer accountability trails, supporting both consumer protection and more predictable compliance expectations for serious players.
