GRSE Sets Sail Into A New Era With The Launch Of India's First Next-Gen Offshore Patrol Vessel

GRSE added another landmark achievement to its legacy on Wednesday with the launch of Sanghmitra, the first of four NGOPVs being built for the Indian Navy. The launch, held at Kolkata, was graced by Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Vice Chief of Naval Staff, reinforcing the strategic significance of the occasion.

A Warship Named After History

The vessel is named Sanghmitra, meaning "friend of the community," and draws inspiration from the eldest daughter of Emperor Ashoka, known for spreading Buddha's teachings in Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC. The name reflects both heritage and humanitarian purpose.

Formidable Capabilities At Sea

The NGOPVs are significantly larger than their predecessors, measuring 113 metres in length and 14.6 metres in width, with a displacement of 3,000 tons. They can achieve speeds of up to 23 knots and have an endurance of 8,500 nautical miles at 14 knots. With a draught of only 4 metres, they are equally effective in coastal and deep-water operations.

Roles Beyond Combat

These versatile platforms will undertake maritime interdiction, anti-piracy operations, mine warfare, counter-infiltration, and special operations. They are also equipped to support humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, search and rescue missions, and can function as hospital or COMINT ships.
