India-New Zealand FTA Opens Doors, 70% Goods To Flow Duty-Free For MSMEs

After years of negotiations, India and New Zealand are set to finalize a bilateral FTA that promises to reshape trade ties. The agreement was discussed at the highest levels, including between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.

Duty-Free Access

Under the pact, 70% of Indian goods will enter New Zealand without import duties, improving market access for Indian exporters. This includes traditional industries and MSME-driven sectors, which often struggle with tariff barriers in global markets.

Boost For MSMEs

Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized that the agreement will open new opportunities for Agra’s leather industry, Uttar Pradesh’s handloom and handicrafts, carpentry, and hand-carving sectors. By reducing costs and expanding reach, MSMEs will gain a competitive edge in New Zealand’s market.

Strategic Importance

New Zealand’s Trade Minister Todd McClay described the India-New Zealand relationship as “the strongest he has ever known.” The FTA is expected to deepen economic engagement, expand export avenues, and strengthen bilateral ties. Direct flights between India and New Zealand are also being considered, which would further enhance tourism and trade.
