India Tightens Fuel Flow: Export Duties On Diesel And ATF Raised Sharply

Government’s Decision

The Finance Ministry announced the hike in export duties, also referred to as windfall taxes, on April 11, 2026. Petrol exports remain exempt, with no duty imposed. The revised rates replace the earlier duties of ₹21.5 per litre on diesel and ₹29.5 per litre on ATF, which were introduced on March 26.

Reason Behind The Hike

The government’s decision comes in response to surging global oil prices and supply disruptions linked to the war in West Asia. By raising export duties, India aims to discourage excessive fuel exports, stabilize domestic supply, and prevent refiners from taking undue advantage of international price differences.

Industry experts believe the hike will help maintain fuel availability within India, especially for transport and aviation sectors. However, exporters may face reduced margins, and global buyers could see tighter supplies from Indian refiners.
