Soymeal U-Turn: Why India Scrapped Export Deals And Turned Buyer Overnight

India has cancelled about 25,000 tonnes of soymeal export contracts for the first time since 2021 and simultaneously booked around 80,000 tonnes of soybean imports from African suppliers. Soaring domestic soybean prices, tight supplies and a sharp jump in local soymeal rates have flipped trade flows almost overnight. The move is reshaping Asia’s soymeal trade matrix, with buyers pivoting back to North and South American exporters while India turns net buyer to cool its own market.

The reversal underscores how quickly agri trade can shift when weather, output and prices collide, particularly in a feed ingredient as sensitive as soymeal.  

What Triggered The Soymeal Export Cancellations  

Indian soybean production has been under pressure, tightening domestic availability just as demand from poultry and livestock feed makers stayed firm. As local soybean prices spiked, soymeal prices shot up nearly 40% in a month, making previously signed export contracts unviable. Traders and overseas buyers mutually agreed to wash out May–June shipments, with export offers jumping from roughly 475 dollars to around 695 dollars per tonne free on board. At those levels, Indian soymeal simply lost price competitiveness in key Asian markets.  

Why India Is Importing From Africa Now  

With domestic prices elevated and crushers struggling to source beans at workable rates, traders turned to imports, locking in an estimated 80,000 tonnes of soybeans from African origins. These purchases help bridge the supply gap until the next Indian crop arrives and give African exporters a rare chance to sell at a premium to global benchmarks. The shift also opens space for US, Brazilian and Argentine soymeal suppliers to regain market share in Asia that India had partially captured when its prices were lower.  

What Changes In Global Soy Trade Dynamics  

India’s role is temporarily swinging from opportunistic soymeal exporter to price‑pressured importer. This not only tightens the African oilseed balance but also redistributes export demand back to the Americas. If domestic output stays weak and prices remain high, India could import close to a record volume of soybeans this marketing year, keeping local feed costs elevated and margins tight for poultry and livestock players.
