Indian Tourists Flock to Japan, Spending Over Rs 3300 Crore in 2025

Indian travelers have made Japan their preferred international destination, with over 2.33 lakh tourists visiting the country so far in 2025. According to the Japan National Tourism Organisation, Indian visitors collectively spent 56.1 billion yen, approximately Rs 3310 crore, marking a significant shift in travel trends.  

Key Highlights from the Tourism Surge  
- Each Indian tourist spent an average of 2,41,590 yen, around Rs 1.45 lakh, reflecting a 53.6 percent increase compared to 2019.  
- The average stay duration has risen to 16.3 nights, indicating a growing interest in exploring Japan beyond short visits.  
- Popular destinations include Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hiroshima, with increasing attention toward lesser-known regions.  

Changing Travel Preferences and Market Trends  
- Around 86.9 percent of Indian tourists preferred independent travel without a tour guide, showcasing a shift toward personalized experiences.  
- Nearly 65 percent of visitors were traveling to Japan for the first time, highlighting the country’s growing appeal among Indian travelers.  
- The trend has continued into 2025, with 62,100 Indians visiting Japan in the first three months alone, a 24.8 percent increase from the same period in 2024.  

Upcoming Events and Future Outlook  
- The Osaka Expo 2025 is expected to further boost Indian tourism, with the Indian pavilion showcasing the country’s culture, spirituality, and technology.  
- Seasonal attractions such as cherry blossom festivals and winter landscapes in Hokkaido continue to draw Indian travelers.  
- Japan’s tourism board is actively promoting lesser-known destinations to encourage deeper cultural exploration.
