Fresh US inflation data has pushed up forecasts for the 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), suggesting retirees could see a noticeably larger raise than previously expected. Early projections now cluster around a 3.8–4.2% COLA, up from prior estimates in the 2.8–3.2% range, as gas and food prices re-accelerate.

The COLA, which is based on the CPI-W inflation gauge, will not be finalised until October 2026. But with recent data showing an annual jump in the CPI-W and inflation running close to 4%, independent analysts and senior groups say the trajectory now points to a meaningfully bigger boost to monthly benefits in 2027 than retirees saw this year.

How Much More Could Retirees Get

One widely cited model pegs the 2027 COLA at about 3.9%, up from an earlier 2.8% estimate. That would lift the average retired worker’s benefit by roughly 81 dollars a month, from about 2,081 dollars to around 2,162 dollars. Some analysts see an even higher potential COLA, closer to 4.2%, if current trends in gasoline, energy and grocery prices persist.

Why Inflation Is Rewriting The COLA Outlook

The latest inflation surprise has been driven by costlier fuel, energy services and staples like food, categories that weigh heavily on seniors’ budgets and the CPI-W index used for COLAs. It marks the fastest annual price rise in many months, reversing some of last year’s disinflation and forcing forecasters to revise their COLA assumptions higher in one go.

Caveats, Trust Fund Pressure And Planning

These figures remain projections; only third-quarter 2026 CPI-W data will lock in the final 2027 COLA. A fatter COLA without matching wage growth would modestly worsen Social Security’s long-term funding gap and could nudge the trust fund’s projected insolvency date forward. Retirees are being urged to treat any extra 2027 bump as welcome breathing room, not a reason to relax overall retirement planning discipline.
