Jindal Power Secures Competition Commission Approval to Acquire Jaiprakash Associates

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved Jindal Power's bid to acquire Jaiprakash Associates Limited (JAL), a major move in the ongoing insolvency resolution process of the debt-ridden conglomerate.

Key Highlights of The Acquisition Approval

The CCI granted in-principle approval for the acquisition contingent on Jindal Power winning the bid in the insolvency proceedings.

The acquisition approval aligns with a recent Supreme Court ruling mandating CCI clearance before submission of a resolution plan for insolvent companies.

Alongside Jindal Power, acquisitions by PNC Infratech, Adani Group, and Dalmia Bharat have also received clearance, highlighting broad interest in JAL.

Jaiprakash Associates is undergoing Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) after defaulting on loans valued at approximately Rs 57,185 crore.

The National Asset Reconstruction Company Ltd (NARCL) is the leading creditor, having taken over stressed loans from a consortium of lenders headed by the State Bank of India.

JAL’s asset portfolio includes prominent real estate projects like Jaypee Greens in Greater Noida and Noida, commercial office spaces in Delhi-NCR, hospitality properties, cement plants, and limestone mines.

Some cement plants are currently non-operational while parts of JAL's infrastructure projects like Jaypee Infratech have been acquired by other groups.

The Committee of Creditors (CoC) is reviewing resolution plans, with the final decision pending the voting process as per Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) regulations.
