Justice Surya Kant Named 53rd Chief Justice of India, To Take Charge on November 24

Justice Surya Kant, currently serving as a judge of the Supreme Court of India, has been officially appointed as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). The announcement was made by the Department of Justice under the Union Law Ministry on October 30, 2025. His appointment follows the retirement of incumbent CJI Justice Bhushan R. Gavai, who demits office on November 23.

Born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Kant brings over two decades of judicial experience, including his tenure as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. Known for his landmark judgments on constitutional law and governance, he will lead the judiciary during a critical phase of legal reforms and digital transformation.
