Lipulekh Legacy: India Snubs Nepal’s Objection To Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Path

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a sacred pilgrimage for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers, is scheduled between June and August 2026. India recently announced that the Yatra will proceed via Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and Nathu La in Sikkim, prompting Nepal to raise objections.

Nepal’s Objection

Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed that Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, and Kalapani are integral parts of Nepal under the 1816 Sugauli Treaty. Kathmandu argued that India and China finalized the route without consultation and conveyed its concerns to both governments. 

India’s Response

India dismissed Nepal’s claims as a “unilateral artificial enlargement of territorial claims.” The MEA emphasized that Lipulekh has been a recognized route for the Yatra since 1954 and that the pilgrimage through this pass has continued for decades. India reiterated its willingness to resolve boundary issues with Nepal through dialogue and diplomacy. 

Religious And Strategic Significance

The Yatra leads pilgrims to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar in Tibet, sites of immense spiritual importance. Beyond religion, the Lipulekh Pass also holds strategic value as a trade and transit route between India and China, making territorial claims highly sensitive.
