Madhya Pradesh Leverages Radio Bulletins to Mitigate Human-Wildlife Conflicts

In a proactive attempt to minimize human-wildlife conflicts, the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department has started radio bulletins to update villagers about the movement of elephants, tigers, and leopards. This will enhance safety and awareness among communities living near wildlife habitats. The program is based on the model of Chhattisgarh's 'Hamar Haathi, Hamar Goth' broadcast, which has effectively minimized human-elephant encounters. This way, the department wants to prevent a chance encounter that would cause untold damage on both sides while promoting harmonious coexistence of humans and wild animals. This is supplemented with radio-collaring for tracking and WhatsApp groups for speedy exchange of information, among other ways.
