Modi’s ₹2 Lakh Crore PLI Scheme: The Golden Ticket for Indian Manufacturing

India’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme is making waves across the manufacturing sector, and for good reason. Launched in 2020, the scheme is the Modi government’s ambitious push to turn India into a global manufacturing powerhouse, reduce import dependence, and create jobs. With a whopping ₹2 lakh crore earmarked for incentives across 14 key sectors—including electronics, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and more—the PLI scheme is being called a “golden goose” for Indian industry.

Massive Investment and Impact: As of late 2024, investments under the PLI scheme have already crossed ₹1.6 lakh crore, with the government expecting this to hit ₹2 lakh crore soon. This has led to production and sales worth over ₹14 lakh crore and generated more than 11.5 lakh jobs (direct and indirect).

 

Exports and Global Reach: The scheme has helped India move up the value chain, with exports from PLI sectors surpassing ₹5.3 lakh crore. Electronics, pharmaceuticals, and food processing have seen especially strong growth, turning India from a net importer to a net exporter in some categories.

 

Sectoral Success Stories: The electronics sector, particularly smartphone manufacturing, has been a standout, with India now producing 97% of its mobile phones domestically. The auto, pharma, and textile sectors have also seen major boosts in investment and output.

 

Challenges and Next Steps: While the results are impressive, not all sectors have moved at the same pace. Some companies struggled to meet targets, and the government is now considering tweaks for a “PLI 2.0” to focus more on domestic value addition and exports.

 

The PLI scheme has become a cornerstone of India’s manufacturing renaissance, fueling growth, jobs, and exports—and positioning the country as a serious player on the world stage.
