Travel plans to Bali were thrown into disarray after Mount Lewotobi LakiLaki erupted in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province, spewing ash up to 11 kilometers into the sky. The eruption, which began Tuesday evening and continued into Wednesday, prompted the highestlevel alert from Indonesia’s volcanology agency and led to widespread flight cancellations.

Key Highlights:
  • Flight Disruptions: Dozens of international flights to and from Bali were cancelled, including services by Air India, Jetstar, Virgin Australia, Air New Zealand, Singapore’s Tigerair, and China’s Juneyao Airlines
  • Airport Closures: Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Airport in Maumere was shut until Thursday for safety reasons
  • Evacuations: Villages near the volcano were blanketed in ash, forcing authorities to evacuate residents
  • Ongoing Activity: Tremors continue, and authorities warn of possible lahar floods if heavy rains hit the region
  • Tourist Impact: Bali’s main airport remains operational, but flight status varies by airline and route
Despite the chaos, no casualties have been reported. The eruption has reignited concerns about Indonesia’s seismic vulnerability, as the country sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a hotspot for volcanic and earthquake activity.

Travelers are advised to check with airlines for updates and avoid areas within 7 kilometers of the volcano’s crater, as advised by the country’s geology agency.
